As part of project NEWREL (New Religious Movements in the Russian North), which she coordinated under the auspices of the European Science Foundation programme BOREAS, Patty Gray carried out fieldwork in the Russian Far East city of Magadan to investigate the activities of foreign Christian missionaries. She teamed up with Alexandra S. Antohin, her MA student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Dr. Antohin went on to obtain her PhD in Anthropology from University College London.
